The Ionian coast is perfect for family holidays and for swimming with children, since the beaches shelve gently into the sea so the water is shallow near the shore. The coast also has facilities for wind surfing, water skiing and sailing. The ‘Circolo Velico Akiris Lucano” in Policoro offers several courses from canoeing to water skiing, sailing and wind surfing. The most popular resorts for families on the Ionian Coast are the resorts of Metaponto and Policoro.

The WWF Oasis Policoro Herakleia Nature Reserve in Policoro is perfect for families and is definitely worth a visit Within the reserve, it is possible to visit the Recovery Centre for Wild Animals (CRAS)  and participate in various activities organized by the Environmental Education Centre (CEA), which include forest walks, horse riding on the beach, archery, and water sports such as canoeing and sailing.

Acquazzurra Water Park is located in the town of Metaponto, situated on the Ionian coast.  The water park is suitable for all the family and offers a variety of flumes and slides, shallow splash pools, sporting activities and entertainment.



Maratea is situated on the Tyrrhenian Coast and has lots on offer for family holidays. There are many sea caves which can be explored by boat with one accessible by foot, there are also opportunities for snorkelling and scuba diving. During the holiday season it is also possible to hire boats or go out on an organised sailing or fishing trip. La Grotta delle Meraviglia is the only sea cave accessible on foot, there are some amazing stalactite and stalagmite formations to be seen in its deep underground caverns.



Italy’s largest national park is a great place for families to visit. There are plenty of towns and villages within the park to see, depending on what activities you want to do.

Lake Senise offers a variety of water sports including rowing, canoeing and sailing through the beautiful water courses created by this artificial lake. Lake Senise also hosts some important national rowing events, drawing in athletes from the whole of Italy.

Families can enjoy a day out at the Pollino Adventure Park, located only a few miles away from the village of San Severino Lucano. The park offers a variety of high ropes canopy courses suitable for different ages, a picnic area, a playground and a ropes course suitable for individuals with disabilities.

Also nearby is the town of St Constantino Albanese in the Pollino National Park, where you can experience the exhilarating zip-wire experience Flight of the Eagle (minimum age is 10 years).

Rafting and canoeing can be experienced on the River Lao, in the village of Laino Borgo, just over the Calabrian border. For families with younger children, there are ’soft rafting’ courses available suitable for adults and children from 4 years and over.
