Held on Shrove Tuesday, the Montese Carnival is a folk festival, celebrating nature’s cycle. Costumes once used in the Montese Carnival were made from skins of animals, then with hemp and jute. Today, paper, cardboard, textiles and disused materials are used. Apart from dressing up, expect a diverse international line up of music and arts.
THE PARADE OF THE CROSS
On the afternoon of Good Friday, the famous ‘Via Crucis’, or ‘way of the Cross’ is a costumed parade that takes place to celebrate the procession of Christ on his way to the cross. This is traditionally a religious festival, and is heavily celebrated in the region of Basilicata. The festival is bright, colourful and full of activity and excitement. This is an annual event that occurs in the same location every year, always on the afternoon of Good Friday.
