Matera, the city named European Capital of Culture in 2019, has been attractingMatera tourism and increasing the amount of holiday goers to Basilicata! It has been reported by Italian news agency Adkronos that during the first half of this year, the attention Matera has received has had a positive impact on tourism to Basilicata. Turismo.it has also been discussing how Matera has been fascinating everyone. When choosing European Capital of Culture in 2019, seven out of thirteen members of the jury preferred Matera over the other cities. The effects this decision has had, can be clearly seen. As according to some sources, from the beginning of January, regional authorities have reported a +30% increase in arrivals to Matera.

Why visit Matera? Matera is an ancient city whose origins are lost in history. With evidence dating back to Paleolithic periods, it is considered to be one of the oldest cities in the world. Also known for being ‘the city of stone’, the unique geographical position of the city has enabled it to pass almost unscathed through centuries of history.
