The golden anniversary of the statue of Christ the Redeemer of Maratea.

Enhance the image of Christ the Redeemer and contribute to consolidating the role of Maratea as one of the most popular destinations in Basilicata. These are the objectives of the project of the Committee of the Redeemer in 2015, the year when we will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the creation of the statue of Christ on the Mount San Biagio by Bruno Innocenti in 1965.

The project was presented at a conference in Maratea, providing interventions and events of a religious, tourist and structural nature. “The activities of the Committee aims to promote the image of Christ in Europe and in the world – said the president Salvatore Cirigliano – but also to increase the number of tourists in Maratea, in the Gulf of Policastro and Basilicata.” All in honour of the Redeemer, the initiatives ranging from the establishment of a religious holiday in a number of sports background votive, with inevitable repercussions in terms of tourism, such as paragliding competitions, or the race Maratea-Stromboli, and the reopening of an old trail from the port allowing people to walk up towards Christ.

The program will also include the renovation work of the Innocents and the restoration of the lightning protection system. “For these interventions – has announced the President of the Basilicata Region, Marcello Pitella – have been allocated 350 thousand euros.” The governor then assured the Committee with the support of the Region of Basilicata, because “Maratea, Matera together, represents one of the drivers of tourism development and territorial cohesion of Basilicata and for this reason the committee’s work should become a heritage for all Marateans”.

Director General of the APT, Gianpiero Perri said , “The Promotion Agency Territorial support this example of planning the height of Maratea, of which the Redeemer is a sacred symbol and tourist centred. It not only to promote the image of the seaside resort, but by the profound experience of place, which was shown on the occasion of the World Youth Day 2013, when the city hosted young people from across the Basilicata. The question for the future, as well Matera, also relates to Maratea – added Perri – ‘A City of 44Churches ‘, an example of extraordinary culture, and the city proud, capable of acts of zeal and courage as he showed during the siege of Napoleon”.

Do not miss the support of the town of Maratea, assured the new mayor Dominic Cipolla, “because this project has followed up with initiatives after 2015, I think the recognition of our city as a permanent home and a point of reference for young people from all over Southern Italy on the occasion of future World Youth Days, in the wake of 2013”.
